Paul Desmond and Gerry Mulligan Biography
Individually, Paul Desmond and Gerry Mulligan rank with the greatest jazz saxophonists of their era, exemplifying the energy and invention of the West Coast school of cool jazz. Alto giant Desmond’s work, both as a member of the Dave Brubeck Quartet and on his own albums, spotlighted his lyrical style and his keen sense of melody and harmony. Master baritonist Mulligan possessed a gruffer but equally fluid approach, and his large and varied body of work is a testament to his creativity and adventurousness. Both of the saxophonists were brilliant, witty improvisers, and they demonstrated a remarkable rapport on the three albums they made together between 1954 and 1962. Desmond and Mulligan would record together again in 1972, this time in collaboration with Dave Brubeck.
